Cech admits title frustrations

Petr Cech has admitted his frustration at Arsenal’s failure to mount a serious title challenge since he moved to the Emirates.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger signed Cech from London rivals Chelsea in 2015 to try and add the finishing touches to a potentially title-winning team.

But Wenger’s men have fallen short in each of the two seasons and already look outside bets in this year’s race.

But Cech, 35, who won the Premier League four times at Chelsea, admits he can understand the fans’ frustrations particularly as they have not won it since 2004.

The atmosphere could reach boiling point if they lose the North London derby and Cech said: “When I joined the club, you can see how big and strong the support the club has.

“People are passionate, they’ve been supporting the club over the years.

“When you are used to seeing the team winning the title and suddenly have a 12 year gap then when you have a little hope, then there’s a little bit missing, you have one point missing there, two points missing here.

“That’s why last season the reaction of the fans was the strongest because when you accumulate year after year then I can understand the frustration.

“I have to say as a player you get frustrated as well when you don’t reach your targets because that’s why you come every day, prepare every day, why you train and I’m used to winning titles and I’m not happy when three years in a row you don’t win one.”
Arsene Wenger holds the FA Cup trophy aloft after their victory over Chelsea
Arsene Wenger has told Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino that his side must overcome the “fear” of not winning a trophy if they are to earn silverware in the future.

Spurs have improved markedly since the arrival of Pochettino in 2014 and finished second in the Premier League last season.

They also ended the campaign above Arsenal for the first time in Wenger’s 21-year reign - although the Gunners did win the FA Cup for a record 13th time.

Despite earning plenty of admirers for their style and exuberance, Tottenham have not been able to win a trophy since lifting the League Cup in 2008.

Pochettino has yet to come under pressure to start delivering silverware but, ahead of Saturday’s north London derby at the Emirates Stadium, Wenger has offered words of advice to the Argentinian.

Asked how he got over the line to deliver his first trophy as a manager, Wenger replied: “By keeping your nerves and getting the players to focus on what is important.”
